How the Specified Skilled Worker route works
Specified Skilled Worker (tokutei ginou) is different from most work visas because the qualification comes before the employer. You first pass a skills test for a specific sector — nursing care, food service, agriculture, construction, building cleaning and several others — and separately demonstrate Japanese language ability, usually through the JFT-Basic test or JLPT N4. Only then do you look for an employer in that sector.
This means a Nepali applicant is not dependent on finding a sponsor first, which is the usual bottleneck in the UK or Australian systems. It also means an agent who offers you a Japanese job before you hold a skills test pass is describing something that does not exist.
- The skills test is sector-specific, so choose the sector before you start preparing
- Language is tested separately, normally via JFT-Basic or JLPT N4
- A university degree is not required for this route
- SSW is for designated sectors only, not for general employment in Japan
